Cilacap Floods Submerge 15 Kelurahan, Hundreds Of Residents Refuge At Mosques And Residents' Hall

A total of 307 residents fled after floods hit 15 urban villages in the urban area of Cilacap, Central Java, last Sunday night.

The flood was triggered by heavy rain accompanied by the breakdown of the Yasa River embankment in Tegalkamulyan Village, South Cilacap District.

Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Cilacap Regency BPBD, Budi Setyawan, said the refugees came from South Cilacap, Central Cilacap, and North Cilacap sub-districts. The puddle of water in the area reached a height of 20'50 centimeters.

"Residents who fled were scattered in four locations, namely the Al-Mubarok Mosque, Al-Manar Mosque, Abu Bakar Sidiq Mosque, and RT Semangka Jaya Hall. Most of them consist of women, children, and toddlers," Budi said in Cilacap, Antara, Monday, October 13.

Floods began to occur around 21.00 WIB, when heavy rains flushed the urban area of Cilacap. In addition to high rainfall, the 25-meter-long embankment of the River Yasa with a height of two meters exacerbated water into settlements.

According to BPBD, the flood affected 65,094 houses and disrupted the activities of residents in a number of schools and places of worship. As of Monday morning, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries.

To help affected residents, BPBD together with the TNI/Polri, Basarnas, as well as the Social Service for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (Dinsos PP and PA) Cilacap Regency have established public kitchens in the Dinsos PP and PA Shelters.

Emergency handling efforts are still being carried out. Current urgent needs include family kits, food logistics, cleaning equipment, and heavy equipment to repair embankments," said Budi.

He added that the joint team was still monitoring the field considering the potential for aftershocks was still high.

“Kami mengimbau masyarakat untuk tetap waspada dan segera melapor ke posko siaga jika terjadi peningkatan debit air,” ujarnya.
