Putera himself was born in a family of businessmen. The father is named Liem Swie Tee alias Aga Sampoerna, while his grandfather is named Liem Seeng Tee.

The Sampoerna cigarette company itself was originally founded by its grandfather, Liem Seeng Tee. After that it was passed on to Aga Sampoerna, and is currently being continued by Putera Sampoerna.

As the grandson of a conglomerate, his education is mostly pursued abroad. For example, he took his first international education in HongKong, namely at Diocesan Boys School. After that, he continued to Carey Baptist Grammar School, Melbourne, Australia. Putera then took a Bachelorship degree education at the University of Houston, Texas, United States.

After his education was completed, Putera then married Katie, a woman of Chinese descent, a citizen of the United States. From that marriage, both of them have four children.

Even though he has a large family business, Putera does not immediately enter the company where his grandfather lives. Instead, he moved to Singapore and runs an oil palm plantation business owned by a Malaysian businessman.

After that Putera tried to establish her own companies, namely Alfa and Bank Sampoerna. Under her command, Alfa has managed to grow rapidly until now. Meanwhile, Bank Sampoerna failed to develop and stopped operating. However, in 2012 the bank was revived under the name PT Bank Sahabat Sampoerna.

In the 1980s, Putera finally decided to return to Indonesia and join the company that was already held by his father. In 1986, Putera was then appointed CEO of PT HM Sampoerna to replace his father.

Under Putera's leadership, Sampoerna managed to become a fast-growing cigarette company. In fact, the company has succeeded in creating innovations for new products in the form of low tar and nicotine cigarettes (mild) with brand A Mild. Now this type of cigarette has its own consumer segmentation.

In 1994, his father finally died. The company was then handed over to his son in 2000. Since then PT HM Sampoerna has been held by Michael Samperna. Not long after, he also founded Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) which was held by his daughter, Michelle Sampoerna.

In 2011, Putera Sampoerna won the 2011 Peace Through Commerce Medal Award which was awarded by the US Department of Trade International Administration. The award was given for Putera's continued efforts to increase international trade between Indonesia and the US.

American business magazine Forbes has several times included Putera Sampoerna in the list of rich people in Indonesia. In 2020, for example, Putera is included in the list of the 50 richest people in Indonesia with a wealth of Rp26 trillion.
