BENGKULU - Heavy rain that has been pounding North Bengkulu since Sunday evening, September 28, has flooded four sub-districts. Water levels reached more than 1 meter, inundating residential areas and the West Sumatra Trans-Sumatran Highway.

Kristain Hermansyah, Secretary of the Bengkulu Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), stated that the worst conditions occurred in Batik Nau Sub-district.

"Heavy and prolonged rain caused a river near the village to overflow and inundate residential areas," said Khristain.

According to preliminary data, the four sub-districts affected by the flooding are Batik Nau (the worst-hit, with water levels exceeding 1 meter), Giri Mulya, Air Besi, and Pinang Raya.

In addition to homes, flooding also inundated the West Sumatra Trans-Sumatran Highway in Batik Nau, disrupting traffic flow. One school was reportedly flooded.

The Bengkulu Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is still collecting data on the number of houses affected and the estimated losses due to the flooding.

"In Batik Nau, in addition to houses, the flood also submerged the West Sumatra Trans-Sumatra Highway. We are still collecting data on the number of houses submerged and the losses caused," he added.

Based on information from residents and road users, as of Monday afternoon water was still submerging parts of the Batik Nau area, even though the rain had started to ease.
