JAKARTA - The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held an international film festival for member countries of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OKI) this week as part of Indonesia's soft diplomacy.

Packed in the "Arts Lumiere Indonesia Festival (ALIF): Muslim World Movie Screening 2025", this activity will present films from OIC member countries and be held on September 19-21, 2025 in Jakarta.

"This is the first initiation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the ALIF framework which we design annually as a cultural festival for OIC member countries initiated by the Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," explained the Director of Public Diplomacy of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ani Nigeriawati in a press statement in Jakarta, Tuesday, September 16.

He further explained, this year will focus first on the field of the game. Next year, the plan is not only for films, but also culinary to arts and culture.

"The point is this is a festival to bridge friendship, strengthen people to people contact between OIC members," explained Ani.

Raising the theme "Stories of Peace", Ani said this festival is a stage for the filmmakers of the OIC Member States to present narratives depicting a peaceful, moderate and diversity Islamic face.

Ani added that this event is also in line with the 11/51-C Resolution on "Promotion of Cooperation among OIC Members States in the Cultural Domain and Supporting Cinematographic Production" which was adopted at the 51st OKI Ministerial Conference (KTM) on 21-22 June 2025 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Meanwhile, national film figure Deddy Mizwar appreciated the concrete steps taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by holding this festival, considering it an interesting thing because the participants were from Islamic countries.

"If you look at the list, Iran, Turkey, can include the film, this is extraordinary," said Deddy on the same occasion.

"Turkey has risen up in the film industry, Iran before the tour has advanced the film industry once, thinking about making world-class films. I think this means a lot to their presence," he continued.

"They (Iran and Turkey) include the most films. This means that they are enthusiastic. Islamic countries whose film industry is advancing are enthusiastic about participating in this festival," he said.

It is known that this international film festival was attended by 16 OIC members, including Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia. The genres presented include documentaries, dramas, social dramas and fiction.

A total of 45 feature and short films will be screened in four locations, namely XXI Djakarta Theater, Jakarta State University, National Gallery and Jakarta Arts Building. Apart from screenings, there will also be discussions about films with filmmakers and academics.
