YOGYAKARTA The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the total lunar eclipse that will occur on Sunday night can be observed from all regions of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY).
"From all regencies and cities in DIY, you can clearly see this phenomenon, as long as the weather is not covered by clouds," said the Head of the Sleman Geophysics Station, Ardhianto Septiadhi, when contacted in Yogyakarta, Sunday.
He said the weather forecast in Yogyakarta was sunny, so the opportunity for people to witness the astronomical phenomenon was quite large.
According to Ardhi, the early phase of the penumbral eclipse will start at 22.26 WIB, the peak occurred on Monday, September 8 in the morning at 01.11 WIB, and ended at around 03.56 WIB.
At its peak, the moon will appear reddish due to the blue light from the sun filtered by the Earth's atmosphere, while the red light remains penetrating to the surface of the moon.
"This month's eclipse is safe to see with the naked eye. It is not as dangerous as during the solar eclipse," he said.
BMKG Yogyakarta will also conduct direct observations from the office from 23.00 WIB to 03.30 WIB. Ardhi added that this phenomenon could be a means of public education related to the solar system.
"So myths like the moon eaten by buto (giant) need to be straightened out. This actually shows that the sun, earth, and moon are in a straight line," he said.
