MANOKWARI - A total of 1,061 correctional inmates in West Papua are proposed to receive general remission in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence on August 17, 2025.
Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) West Papua, Hensah, said that remission is a form of state appreciation to prisoners who show changes in positive attitudes and behavior during their criminal period.
"The amount of remission varies, and now not all inmates who have met the requirements are immediately entitled to receive it. Both for general and special crimes," said Hensah in Manokwari, Antara, Friday, August 8.
Of the total 1,061 inmates proposed, 1,033 people were included in the general remission category I or reduced prison terms, while 28 others were proposed to receive general remission II, which was immediately released after receiving a reduced prison term.
The details, from the general remission category I, as many as 198 people were proposed to receive 1 month remission, 276 people 2 months, 272 people 3 months, 169 people 4 months, 104 people 5 months, and 14 people received 6 months remission.
The proposed general remission II came from Manokwari Prison as many as 10 people, Sorong Prison 15 people, Fakfak Prison 2 people, and Teluk Bintuni Detention Center 1 person.
The proposed inmates came from eight prisons and detention centers in the West Papua region. Class IIB Sorong Prison proposed the most with 373 people, followed by Class IIB Manokwari Prison 306 people, Class IIB Fakfak Prison 78 people, Teminabuan Class III Prison 66 people, Kaimana Class III Prison 53 people, Manokwari Women's Prison Class III 43 people, Manokwari Class II Child Prison 16 people, and Teluk Bintuni Class IIB Detention Center 126 people.

Hensah emphasized that all proposed prisoners had gone through a strict assessment process and were declared to meet administrative and substantive requirements.
"The proposal from the regions will be reverified by the Correctional Center Unit of the Directorate General of Law and Human Rights. After that, a remission decree (SK) was issued," he said.
