JAKARTA - Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the West's demand for Tehran's nuclear program was an excuse to confront Tehran.
This was conveyed after US President Donald Trump warned of a new attack if Iran restarted its nuclear program.
"The nuclear program, enrichment, human rights, are all a pretext," Khamenei said Tuesday in a speech in Tehran to commemorate Iranian military commanders and scientists who died in the 12-day Israeli-Iran war last month, quoted by The Times of Israel July 30.
"What they are after are your religion and knowledge," he added.
Iran denies accusations of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is peaceful, although it is said to have enriched uranium to near the level required for weapons.
Earlier, President Trump, who ordered an attack on Iran's three main nuclear sites during an Israeli campaign targeting the nuclear program, said on Monday the US would "openly and with pleasure" attack Iran again if the country restarted its nuclear program.
