BPOM Investigate Case Of MBG Food Poisoning In Kupang, 140 Students Treated

JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) is investigating the alleged case of food poisoning experienced by dozens of students participating in the Free Nutrition Food Program (MBG) in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

The Head of BPOM Taruna Ikrar said that the team from the BPOM Kupang laboratory had intervened to investigate the food consumed by students.

"A total of 10 schools that receive services from one Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) are being investigated. Our laboratory is currently working to determine the exact cause. If there are results, we will announce them," Taruna said at a press conference in Jakarta, Antara, Friday, July 25.

According to him, the MBG program is an important policy that must be closely monitored, especially if an Extraordinary Event (KLB) occurs like in Kupang. Taruna added that the results of the investigation could not be announced at this time.

"I think there are several factors that we can consider, but now is not the time to open," he said.

Previously, around 140 students of SMPN 8 Kupang were reported to have symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting after eating food from the MBG program.

The Mayor of Kupang, Christian Widodo, ensured that all affected students received optimal medical treatment.

"The most important thing right now is the safety of our children. Don't be busy looking for who's wrong, who's right, while the children are in need of medical help," Christian said while directly reviewing the students being treated, Wednesday, July 23.

The students are now being treated in three hospitals, namely SK Lerik Hospital, Mamami Hospital and Siloam Kupang Hospital. Christian emphasized that the recovery process must be a top priority before a thorough evaluation is carried out of the MBG food distribution chain.
