JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono wants ASEAN and China to strengthen partnerships to maintain regional peace and stability, affirming Indonesia's commitment to cooperation.

Speaking at the 58th ASEAN - China Foreign Ministers Meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting (Post-Ministerial Conference) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Thursday, Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that the ASEAN - China partnership also needs to be developed, not only from an economic aspect but also in maintaining regional peace and stability.

"We must increase cooperation in law enforcement and joint responses to the threat of transnational crime," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Thursday, July 10.

"And we have to make sure that our maritime area remains a peaceful area in accordance with applicable regulations," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

In maintaining the stability of marine areas in the region, Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's commitment to cooperate closely with RRT and other ASEAN countries to complete the Code of Conduct (CoC) negotiations in the South China Sea in 2026.

Previously, the Indonesian Foreign Minister said that the progress in the CoC in the South China Sea negotiations received a speech at the meeting, in line with the mandate at the ASEAN Foreign Minister in 2023 through Guidelines for Accelerating the Early Conclusion of an Effective and Substantive Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.

"ASEAN needs to maintain its commitment to a substantive and effective CoC settlement, which is expected to help maintain maritime stability in the South China Sea," said Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat (AMM Retreat) on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Sugiono underlined, only with equal partnerships, ASEAN and China can create mutually beneficial cooperation for a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.
