Defeated Win, Suharto Defeats Surya Jaya In The Election Of Deputy Chair Of The Supreme Court

JAKARTA Supreme Court Justice Suharto was officially elected as Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (MA) for Judicial Affairs after winning the most votes in the one-round election at the Special Plenary Session at the Supreme Court Building, Jakarta, Thursday, July 10.

Suharto, who previously served as Deputy Chair of the Supreme Court for Non-Judicial Affairs, received 25 votes out of a total of 33 valid votes. He outperformed his only competitor, Supreme Court Justice Surya Jaya, who won eight votes. While the other six votes were declared invalid.

"Based on the minutes from the calculation of the ballot card, it turns out that His Excellency Brother Suharto has received a total of 25. The number of votes is more than 50 percent of the valid votes," said MA Chairman Sunarto while chairing the trial, quoted from Antara.

"Thus, His Excellency Brother Suharto was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court for Judicial Election," he said.

The election was attended by 39 out of a total of 41 Supreme Court justices. The other two judges were not present because they were sick. Of the participants who attended, only two people were willing to be nominated as Deputy Chairs of the Supreme Court for Judicial Affairs, namely Suharto and Surya Jaya.

The election process was carried out behind closed doors and only lasted one round. Suharto received the majority support from the Supreme Court justices.

Chairman of the Supreme Court Sunarto emphasized that the process of selecting leaders in the highest judicial institutions has its own uniqueness, namely not involving campaigns in any form.

"There are no billboards, no banners. All Supreme Court justices who want to be the leader of the Supreme Court are actually campaigning for life through their attitude, speech, and daily behavior," said Sunarto.

During the trial, Sunarto also reminded that a leader must serve, not ask to be served.

"Leaders must try to provide prosperity, not suffering for their subordinates. In fact, leaders must also be role models, be role models," he said.

The Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court for Judicial Elections will soon be proposed to take an oath of office before the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto.

After the inauguration, the Supreme Court will hold an election for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court for Non-Judicial Affairs, which is now vacant along with Suharto's shift in position.

"Let's continue and strengthen this well-established cooperation, to realize the vision of the Supreme Court, namely the realization of a great justice body," Sunarto said closing the trial.
