JAKARTA - Dubai-based airline United Arab Emirates (UAE) flydubai will resume flight to Damascus, Syria starting next month for the first time since the start of the Syrian civil war.

This announcement was made ahead of Eid al-Adha, following the recent announcement of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority to allow the resumption of flights between the two countries.

Damascus was one of Fflydubai's first destinations nearly 16 years ago. However, its services were halted at the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

"Damaskus means culture and special history in the region and we are very happy to be back serving the city with direct services every day, highlighting our commitment to supporting the UAE's efforts to foster regional connectivity," said chief executive of flydubai Ghaith Al Ghaith, quoted from The National 22 May.

Later, flight flydubai FZ 115 will take off every day from Terminal 2 of Dubai International Airport at 06.30 local time and arrive at Damascus International Airport at 08.45 local time. Flights on the other route, namely FZ 116 will take off from Damascus at 10 am and arrive in Dubai at 2.20 pm.

Flydubai will offer business and economic class seats on the flight.

"The re-launch of flights to Damascus will allow passengers from the UAE and its surroundings to enjoy convenient travel options to the market," said Jeyhun Efendi, senior vice president of the commercial and e-commerce operations division at flydubai.

"After working with the relevant authorities to ensure that all necessary operational standards have been met before the re-launch, we look forward to welcoming passengers back soon, just during the upcoming Eid holiday and the peak period of summer travel," he continued.

The resumption of flights between Syria and the UAE came after Syrian President Ahmad Al Shara visited the UAE for the first time in April since taking office, holding talks with President Sheikh Mohamed.

In January, a Syrian Airlines flight with 145 passengers left Damascus to the Sharjah airport (UAE). Syrian Airlines' second flight flew from Damascus to Dubai in April.
