JAKARTA - Students at several Jakarta campuses have recently held a Social Service action to distribute rice to the surrounding community with cheap sugar cane patterns.
The several campuses that have moved include Bung Karno University (UBK) students, Indonesian Christian University (UKI), Indonusa Esa Unggul University, August 17 University (UTA) 45 and Trisakti University.
The student's action is a form of concern and appointment of Tri Dharma Universitas for the nation's economic condition which according to him is getting worse.
For example, the soaring prices of basic necessities are accompanied by a wave of massive layoffs recently.
The student movement received the title of both academics and economic observers.
BRIN Political Researcher, Wasisto Raharjo Jati, is of the view that what students are doing is right. They move quickly to help the community in the midst of the economic situation.
"I think it's part of the student's efforts to take concrete action against the community in a declining economic condition at this time," he told the media crew, Saturday, May 10.
Wasis said that there was also a weak factor in the lower class economy due to the current of layoffs, which resulted in a decrease in buying and selling transactions.
"We are facing economic downturn because purchasing power has decreased due to stagnant economic growth and also labor cuts in various places," said Wasisto.
Academic UIN Syarif Hidayatulloh Dedi Kurnia Syah, believes that the student movement to help people access cheap rice is a very harsh criticism.
"The government should provide these basic services, if students have intervened, it could be because the aspirations of students are not heard," he said.
He continued, the student movement with a pattern like this is a different way than usual. They move as if taking on the role of the state towards their people.
"On the one hand, this kind of student movement deserves to be praised, because it is proven that they did not only carry out demonstrations, but also gave an example directly of what the state should have done," said Dedi.
Dedi also predicts that this movement, if it develops, will be very good, at least students will get community support in the civil prosecution movement against the government.
"Because so far it seems that students are alone in humanitarian actions, especially when conveying their aspirations to the government," said Dedi Kurnia Syah ending.
