North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for the construction of a powerful and modern army to face any war during a visit to the military academy, KCNA Government media reported on Wednesday.

Leader Kim's visit to Kang Kon's Military Academy came after North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia to support its war against Ukraine.

During a visit to the military academy, Leader Kim criticized the management and operation of poor school educational facilities, saying the school failed to meet the goals of the ruling party for its "moderate and advanced character" in building a strong army, KCNA said.

He set the task of renovating facilities and intensifying practice-focused education, so students will learn about the "real experience of modern warfare", and mastering advanced weapons and technical equipment, he said.

"The current international situation, where the aggressive and warlike nature of the most open imperialists is expressed in history and war and bloodshed becomes commonplace, requires the armed forces to tackle the war perfectly," said leader Kim, according to KCNA, quoted by Reuters on February 26.

This week, Leader Kim also visited Kim Il Sung Political University, another elite cadre training institute, calling for loyalty and military sacrifice.

Separately, South Korea's intelligence agency said Kim's previous inspection of military and training units may be part of preparations for sending additional troops to Russia.

South Korean officials have warned that North Korea could benefit from supplying weapons and troops to fight in Russia by gaining experience and insight from operations on modern battlefields.

Kyiv said North Korean troops had suffered heavy casualties in Russia, with more than 3,000 soldiers killed or injured in early January this year.
