Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said negotiations between Russia and the United States in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday were an important step towards a future resolution in Ukraine.

"A very, very important step has been taken to create conditions to reach a peaceful resolution," a Kremlin spokesman said, quoted by TASS on February 20.

"A strong political desire has been shown by both parties, my point in this is Russia and the US," Peskov continued.

As previously reported, the delegation of Russia and the United States met for about 4.5 hours at a royal family palace, Al Diriyah, Albasateen Complex, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Aide to President Yury Ushakov, and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) Kirill Dmitriev.

Meanwhile, the United States was represented by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Talks in Riyadh were the first meeting between US and Russian officials to discuss how to stop Europe's deadliest conflict since World War Two.

Both Russia and the US agreed to restore their respective diplomatic missions after the meeting to facilitate continued diplomatic engagement and support war negotiations in Ukraine.
