JAKARTA - Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Mark Rutte praised the telephone conversation between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Obviously it looks like a successful phone call. We all want peace in Ukraine," NATO Secretary General said ahead of the alliance's defense minister meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

NATO Secretary General reiterated that it is important to ensure Ukraine is in the position of negotiations as best it can.

"It is important that peace lasts a long time," said Rutte.

Secretary General Rutte stressed that allies will discuss the matter in the coming days and weeks.

It is known that President Putin and President Trump held a telephone conversation on Wednesday. Leaders discussed the issue of discontinuing hostilities in Ukraine, bilateral relations, and a number of other issues, and agreed to continue contact and hold face-to-face meetings.

After contacting President Putin, President Trump then contacted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

After the phone call with the Ukrainian leader, President Trump said: "The talks are going very well. He, like President Putin, wants to create peace," as quoted by Reuters.
