PSI Urges Water Tariff Increase To Be Canceled, Observer: People's Representatives Should Listen To Both Sides

JAKARTA - Public policy observer from the University of August 17, Fernando Emas, responded to the urging of members of the PSI faction of the DKI Jakarta DPRD to postpone Widjojo, which urged the increase in water rates in Jakarta to be canceled.

Criticism of water tariff adjustments by haphazard is said to be based on the aspirations of the people he meets. However, Fernando asked PSI to be wise in capturing aspirations.

According to him, members of the council are expected to consider the reason why the DKI Provincial Government issued the policy.

"As a council, we should also consider how from the PAM Jaya side. So it's not just listening to the one-sided community regarding this matter," Fernando told reporters, Tuesday, February 4.

As acknowledged by the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta, Teguh Setyabudi, the increase in the water tariff for PAM Jaya services was carried out because Jakarta had not adjusted the water tariff for 17 years.

Meanwhile, the DKI Provincial Government is targeting clean water services to be fulfilled for all Jakarta residents by 2030. Thus, the expansion of the piping water network.

"So I really hope that if there are representatives of the people who try to listen to these aspirations, from both sides," said Fernando.

On the other hand, Fernando reminded PAM Jaya to continue to improve services to the community. One of them, the level of water leakage must be suppressed, and pipeline connection must be massively carried out so that the target of 100 percent piped water can be achieved by 2030.

"The increase (defense) should indeed be balanced with the quality of service, this is what the community needs, not until the tariff increases, but the quality is the same and the availability of limited water," he explained.

Previously, a member of Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD,men revealed that the PSI faction of the DKI DPRD asked PAM Jaya to postpone the increase in water rates based on Governor Decree Number 730 of 2024 which regulates drinking water rates.

"We from the PSI faction previously asked for the postponement of the increase in PAM Jaya water rates. The 730th Governor's Decree in 2024 regulates drinking water tariffs. Meanwhile, most of Jakarta residents have just received clean water, even then it is not necessarily clean because there are many complaints of dirty water, smell, small discharge, on only certain days or hours, to death," he explained.
