JAKARTA - South Korea's National Intelligence Agency (NIS) hopes that United States President-elect Donald Trump can have a dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and may reach a "small agreement" regarding North Korea's nuclear program.
NIS made the assessment during a closed briefing to lawmakers amid Trump's hopes of taking office on January 20, likely wanting to repeat the diplomacy of his meeting with Kim.
"There is a possibility that Trump is seeking dialogue with Kim because according to Trump, the previous meeting with Kim was a major achievement in his government's career," said NIS, quoted by lawmakers as saying by ANTARA from Yonhap-OANA, Monday, January 13.
NIS saw the opportunity for Trump's involvement with Kim, after learning of his candidacy for former German Ambassador Richard Grenell as the president's envoy for a special mission and the election of former North Korean policy official Alex Wong, as the main adviser of the White House.

In addition, Trump met Jong Un three times during his first administration, including Singapore's first summit in June 2018 and then in Hanoi in February 2019. After failing to reach an agreement in Hanoi, talks over North Korea's denuclearization stalled.
"If the US is not sure full denuclearization from North Korea could occur in a short time, perhaps a 'small agreement' or small-scale negotiations to freeze its nuclear program or nuclear weapons stripping could be made," NIS hoped.
