JAKARTA - The Korean quarantine agency has begun accepting applications to find a new home for eight sniffer dogs who were relieved of their official duties last Monday.

The program focuses on helping retired sniffer dogs, previously stationed at airports and seaports to detect entry of livestock and agricultural goods without a permit, start a new life after retiring, according to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, quoted from The Korea Times Jan. 8.

After receiving the request, the quarantine agency will review the documents and conduct on-site evaluations with animal rights advocacy groups to choose a suitable home for the dogs over a two-month period, with the process set to be completed by the end of March.

Interestingly, even though it has been adopted, the government plans to continue to provide various support for the dogs.

That includes discounts for animal care. The goal is to ensure retired sniffer dogs can adapt well to their new home.

Last year, six retired sniffer dogs were successfully adopted.

"We ask for attention and support to help retired sniffer dogs who have devoted themselves to the country to start a new life with new families," said a senior official from the agency.
