Euro 2020 Group F Standings: France, Portugal And Germany Advance To Round Of 16

JAKARTA - The top teams in Group F Euro 2020, namely France, Portugal and Germany, continued to advance to the round of 16 from the so-called hell group. Euro 2020 group F standings, three teams qualified for the next round, while Hungary as the bottom team had to go home.

Tournament reigning champions Portugal opened the Group F series with a 3-0 win over Hungary thanks to three stoppage-time goals at Budapest, on Tuesday, June 15 as reported by Antara.

A few hours later, a Mats Hummels own goal made the difference between France and Germany as world champions France snatched a narrow 1-0 win in Munich.

The second round of Group F took place on Saturday (19/6) where France was shocked by Hungary and only drew 1-1 when they came under the pressure of a fully packed Puskas Arena.

About three hours later, Germany completed their comeback from defeat in the first leg to crush Portugal 4-2 marked by two own goals from Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro in Munich.

Before the third round was played, the final result of Group A to C ensured France qualified for the round of 16 at least as one of the best third-placed groups in the group stage.

However, Didier Deschamps' team later qualified as group winners after drawing 2-2 against Portugal at Budapest on Wednesday local time (Thursday, western Indonesia time).

All of the goals in the match were due to decisions by referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz and VAR, which resulted in three penalties, two for Portugal converted by Cristiano Ronaldo and one for France by Karim Benzema. Benzema also got one of his goals approved by VAR after being ruled out by the linesman.

Along with these results in Munich, Germany almost became a victim of Hungary's surprise because they were trailing 1-2 from their visitors until entering the final 10 minutes of the match.

In the 74th minute Leon Goretzka became Germany's hero, equalizing 2-2 which lasted until the end, ensuring Joachim Loew's team progress to the last 16.

France won Group F with five points, followed by Germany as runners-up armed with a head-to-head advantage over Portugal despite both collecting four points.

Portugal still qualifies for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed and has the opportunity to repeat a similar scenario five years ago when they qualified from the group stage as third and ended up winning the tournament.
