Polda Asks Public Transport Capacity To Be Added If Odd-Even In Jakarta Reapply

JAKARTA - The Traffic Directorate of Metro Jaya Police has requested that the capacity of mass transportation in Jakarta be increased if the odd system is reinstated in Jakarta.

"If it is odd or even if this is re-enacted, the capacity of public transportation must be increased," said Director of Traffic and Traffic of the Metro Jaya Police Grand Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo, as quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 3.

Grand Commissioner Sambodo understands that there is currently a traffic jam in the morning because many people use private vehicles.

However, in the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, if the odd-even system is reinstated, there will be a shift from private vehicles to mass transportation. If mass transportation capacity is not increased, there will be a surge in passengers which has the potential to cause COVID-19 clusters.

"Now it's still a pandemic period, if there is an odd or even number there will definitely be a shift in transportation modes from private vehicle users to public transport users. So is public transportation ready or not? If on the Sudirman-Thamrin road, maybe there is an MRT, TransJakarta. We can agree to it," he explained.

Sambodo said that there are a number of routes in which the mass transportation system is still inadequate, so it has the potential to cause a surge in passengers.

"For other roads, we will first see how urgent the need for odd-even roads is. Second, whether there is public transportation that passes through there, is it sufficient or not," he said.

However, Sambodo said the decision to apply odd-even is in the hands of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, always the regulator.

"We'll see how the local government decides, although of course all decisions in the traffic sector should be discussed together because in this traffic there are multi-stakeholders, there is Ditlantas, there is Dishub, there is the Bina Marga Service, there are many related there, there are DTKJ (Jakarta City Transportation Council) and so on," he concluded.
