BMKG Asks West Sumatra Residents To Beware Of Potential Extreme Rain After Jabodetabek Floods
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Minangkabau Class II Meteorological Station, Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra (West Sumatra) asked the people in the province to increase their vigilance regarding the potential for extreme weather during the peak of the rainy season.
"In March or when Muslims perform fasting there is a potential for extreme weather and this needs to be watched out for," said Head of BMKG Minangkabau Class II Meteorological Station, Desindra Deddy Kurniawan in Padang, Tuesday, March 4, as reported by Antara.
Deddy said, climatologically, West Sumatra Province is of the equatorial type or within a year the area will face two peaks of the rainy season, namely March and November 2025. Several areas include Nagari Galugua, Kapur IX District, Limapuluh Kota Regency were hit by floods and landslides on Thursday 27 February.
According to BMKG records, the local Meteorological Station for the last few days, the intensity or rainfall in several districts has been categorized as extreme or above 100 millimeters, as happened in Limapuluh Kota and Dharmasraya Regencies.
Then the atmosphere dynamics of West Sumatra Province is also relatively dynamic, especially the presence of bends or convergence that can create convective clouds, and can trigger the growth of cumulonimbus clouds which can cause the potential for heavy rain.
"This cumulonimbus cloud can create heavy to extreme rain, tornadoes, lightning to hail," he said.

Therefore, he said, the public needs to be more vigilant considering that this extreme weather can trigger various kinds of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides and so on. The appeal is especially for people living in disaster-prone areas.
Deddy also said that the March-April period was a transition or transition from the rainy season to the dry season. During the transition period, the weather is usually very dynamic, so people are asked to remain vigilant, including the possibility of various diseases that can arise.
