Rejecting Appeal ByteDance, Supreme Court Still Bans TikTok In The United States

JAKARTA - The United States (US) Supreme Court ruled that the controversial ban on TikTok remains in effect this weekend. The Court rejected an appeal from the app owner, ByteDance, who claimed the ban violated the First Amendment.

Reported by CNN, Friday, January 17, the Court gave an unsigned opinion and there were no differences of opinion.

The decision follows a warning from the Joe Biden administration that the application poses a "serious" national security threat because of its relationship with China. The ban on TikTok began on Sunday, January 19.

However, there are still many questions about how this ban will be implemented because there is no precedent for the US government to block major social media platforms.

In his opinion, the Supreme Court recognizes 170 million Americans, TikTok offers channels of expression, means of engagement, and a distinctive and wide community source.

However, the court said Congress focused on national security issues and that, according to the court, was a determining factor in considering the case.

"Congress has determined that divestment is needed to address national security issues related to TikTok's data collection practices and their relationship with foreign enemies," the court wrote.
