Respect The Late Former US President Carter, This Village In India Changed Its Name To Carterpuri
JAKARTA - This village, which is located in India, changed its name in honor of the late Jimmy Carter, the former President of the United States who had visited there, while his mother had been a volunteer in the region.
Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jimmy Carter died at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100 on Sunday, the Carter Center said.
The village was originally named Daulatpur Nasirabad. Now, the dusty hamlet, which is located about 20 miles from the capital New Delhi, has the name Carterpuri or Carter Village.
Carter's mother, God willing, died and worked there as a nurse as well as a volunteer in the 1960s.
Carter, who took office in 1977, visited the village on January 3, 1978. Preparations were made months before the visit, the villagers told the ANI news agency.

The village was tidied up, and the welcoming ceremony was held in its main square. The villagers were greatly amazed by Carter's visit so that they changed the name of their village to respect it.
"Village residents dress his wife in traditional clothes. She (Carter) is also trying a hood," recalled a resident, Moti Ram, as Carter, accompanied by his wife, Rosalynn, walks through the village.
The village name changed in the same year Carter visited. This week, after hearing Carter's death, they paid tribute to Carter by hanging a wreath on her photo frame and offering flowers in front of her, the media said.
US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti called the village in a post on X following Carter's death saying it was "a testament to the high respect given to him in India".

A letter Carter later sent, which contained thanks to the residents for their efforts to make the event "successful and satisfying personally" is one of the most valuable village property, along with his photos.
The White House on Monday confirmed that the official state funeral will be held in Washington DC on January 9, after President Joe Biden previously announced January 9 as National Berkabung Day in an announcement of the death of the US 39th president.
