Providing Education Services In The Middle Of War, UNRWA: Make Sure Gaza Children Don't Become A Lost Generation
JAKARTA - Commissioner General of the United Nations Aid and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini said on Monday his party's move to provide educational services amid the war was aimed at ensuring children in the Gaza Strip did not become a lost generation.
"In Gaza, in the midst of a humanitarian catastrophe, our team has provided a learning session for thousands of neglected children whose formal education was cut off in October 2023 over the past four months," Lazzarini said in a post on X.
"Through recreational activities, psychosocial support, literacy and basic numeracy exercises, we are trying our best to do what we can to ensure that these children are not the lost generation," he explained.
He stressed, "after the ceasefire, our teachers worked tirelessly to return their classes to work again."
"The ceasefire in Gaza will be an important first step towards returning children to education," he said.
"Wherever we work, UNRWA is committed to helping children become children," said Lazzarini.
"Escalation in Lebanon has disrupted the start of the school year for Palestinian young refugees who have received education from UNRWA for decades," he said.
