Gym Training, British Students Die After Experiencing Head Injury
JAKARTA - A medical student named Mohammed Farraj died while using a gym facility at Sportspark, University of East Anglia (UAE) in Norwich, England. Based on reports, he had practiced weightlifting for several seconds before being declared lifeless.
According to the results of the examination, the temporary cause of Mohammed Farraj's death was due to a traumatic head injury, which he suffered while at the gym.
The 21-year-old student suddenly experienced medical problems while using a weightlifting device at Sportspark, at the University of East Anglia (UAE) campus in Norwich.
Some people who were in the gym heard a "loud noise" after Farraj lost control on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
"It was a tragic accident and it was not a weightlifting error, and Farraj did not have any basic health problems. He is known to be very fit and healthy," said the cousin of the late Farraj, who did not want to be named, as reported by VOI from the Mirror.co.uk page on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
Farraj reportedly fell ill after using a Smith machine weightlifter. The tool consists of a barbell mounted on a steel rail and only allows vertical or nearly vertical movement. Some of Smith's machines have a weighted barbell.
The trial of his death investigation has been opened and suspended, with information requested from his father, general practitioner, and police, before re-examination in February 2025.
"He is a young man who is fit and healthy. May God bless him." said the late father, Hashim Farraj (57).

The family also mentioned an ongoing health and safety investigation related to the death of students. After the tragedy, the Health and Work Safety Agency (HSE) gave a firm statement.
"We continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident," he said.
A lot of respect flows for Mohammed Farraj, who is referred to as " kind and caring" by his friends.
The UAE said it was a member of various organizations, including the Islamic Society, Medical Society, as well as MMA and Boxing clubs. The boxing club announced plans to run 10 km along routes frequent medical students. This is a form of respect for Farraj's departure.
The gym was closed after Farraj's death. However, now the gym has reopened.
"It is with great sadness that we confirm that a student from Norwich Medical School died in Sportspark on Wednesday night," read a statement from the campus.
All parties in the UAE community are sorry for Farraj's departure to the families and friends of the students. They will continue to provide support to all those affected.
"Gym Sportspark will reopen on Tuesday (October 22) at 14.00. Members will be contacted directly regarding the refund when the fitness center and other buildings cannot be used," he said.
"We continue to support the Health and Work Safety Agency (HSE) in their investigation, and the University has decided to withhold related equipment from public use until further notice, as long as the HSE investigation is still ongoing." he continued.
