OpenAI Board Of Directors Will Provide Equity Compensation To CEO Sam Altman

JAKARTA OpenAI plans to restructure its core business into a non-profit company without board control. In connection with this plan, the council is discussing compensation for CEO Sam Altman.

Quoted from Reuters, OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor said that the company's board had considered providing compensation to Altman. They agreed to give it in the form of equity, but no figures have yet been set.

Compensation in this equity form will be the first OpenAI stock for Altman. Since the company was founded in 2015, Altman has never taken shares because OpenAI's structure is so unique.

Since 2019, OpenAI has turned into a capped-profit company to attract more investment while maintaining a non-profit concept. As part of the board of directors, Altman does not accept shares and only receives salaries and bonuses like other workers.

This structure has been implemented for years so that the board of directors does not make side-by-side decisions. However, after OpenAI reorganizes its business system, this structure will change and Altman will accept its first stake.

Prior to the news about this equity compensation, OpenAI was in the spotlight because three senior executives had left the company. The three executives are the Head of Mira Murati Technology and Senior Research Executives of Barret Zoph and Bob McGrew.

Many argue that the departure of Mira Murati with her two colleagues was caused by restructuring. Altman denied the allegation, but did not reveal the reason Murati, Zoph, and McGrew left OpenAI.

"That's not true at all," said Altman some time ago. "A lot of things I saw were completely wrong, but we've been thinking about it (restructuring), our board of directors has been thinking about it independently for almost a year."

Although it did not explain why his three executives left the company, Altman praised their actions. According to Altman, Murati and two of his colleagues have helped the board of directors in simplifying the company's structure.

"Hopefully, this will be a great transition for all parties involved, and OpenAI will be stronger therefore, as we will also be stronger in all of our transitions."
