Demonstration Of Rape Case Of Doctor, Thousands Of People Block Railroads In West Bengal India
Thousands of protesters blocked railroad tracks, stopped buses in the state of West Bengal, India, in a recent demonstration of the rape and brutal murder of an intern.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a 12-hour strike across the state after police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstration the day before.
Most of the protesters on Wednesday, August 28 were BJP workers, who also forced shops to close. A total of 5,000 officers guarded the demonstration.
"If the state government has the authority to make laws, I will make a law within seven days that will mandate the death penalty in a rape incident," said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Many students took part in demonstrations on Tuesday, calling for Banerjee's resignation for her handling of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at a government-run hospital in Kolkata.
