Kang Mak's Film Review From Pee Mak: Comedy With Maximum Local Wisdom

JAKARTA - The Thai film Pee Mak, which aired in 2013, has an adaptation version in Indonesia with the title Kang Mak from Pee Mak. The film, directed by Herwin Novianto, still takes the outline of the story made by Banjong Pisanthanakun.

Vino G. Bastian and Marsha Timothy were paired as the main characters along with Indra Jegel, Indro Warkop, Rigen Rakelna, Tora Sudiro, who were reunited after Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2022).

Kang Mak from Pee Mak tells the story of Kang Mak (Vino G. Bastian) who works as a soldier and leaves his wife, Sari (Marsha Timothy) in a big state of pregnancy. Without knowing his condition, an incident made Sari die during bleeding.

A few months later, Kang Mak finished his job and invited his friends in arms to stop by his house before returning home. Those who were initially interested, were suspicious of Sari's movements until they realized that Sari had become a ghost.

Fajrul (Indra Jegel), Solah (Rigen Rakelna), Jaka (Tora Sudiro), Supra (Indro Warkop) are determined to tell Kang Mak that his wife is dead. But it was not easy because they also experienced challenges when they wanted to save Kang Mak.

If you've watched Pee Mak (2013), maybe you won't be surprised by the storyline. The reason is, the story written by Alim Sudio really places the same scene exactly as the previous film.

However, there is localization made so that Kang Mak from Pee Mak is very enjoyable. Starting from the background of the war, to the comedy side which is controlled by the main characters. The characters of driving the hilarious side who support the film so that the emotional scene is still tucked in the comedy side.

Thanks to the differences in the way of comedy from Indro to Indra Jegel, Indonesian audiences may be connected to the comedy. Sometimes the sprints, sometimes siteal, but everything manages to create laughter moments throughout the watch.

The adjustment also occurred to several sub-plots of Kang Mak, but this did not interfere with the story because the story continued to run smoothly.

In terms of comedy, Indra Jegel and Rigel Rakelna are like deadly duo. Their scene in this film managed to generate fatigue because they laughed too much. While in terms of drama, Vino and Marsha were very touching. Marsha herself felt different because she had a transition moment in this film.

In addition, supporting actors such as TJ Ruth and Andre Taulany also look good. Jirayut, who made a special appearance, also added an interesting story.

Even so, this film is a little less consistent in its setting. The film is said to be set in the 70s, but there are some dialogues with modern words.

In the end, watching Kang Mak doesn't seem to need to think much because this film is designed to be enjoyed as it should be.

The film Kang Mak from Pee Mak opens in Indonesian cinemas starting Thursday, August 15.
