BMKG: M 5.1 Kupang Earthquake Has No Tsunami Potential
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that an earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.1 in Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), had no potential for a tsunami.
"The community remains calm because there is no potential for a tsunami," said Kupang Margiono, Head of Class I Geophysics Station in Kupang, Wednesday.
He explained that the tectonic earthquake occurred at 16:09 WITA in the West Amarasi area, Kupang Regency.
The results of the BMKG analysis show that the earthquake has updated parameters with an M5.1 magnitude and is located on land 24 km southeast of Kupang at a depth of 33 km.

By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, said Margiono, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to active fault activity.
The earthquake also had an impact and was felt in the Kupang area, the Soe area, TTS Regency, and the Alor area.
However, he emphasized that the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami so that people did not need to panic.
"Until 16.50 WITA, it has not shown any aftershock activity," he said.
He asked the public to remain calm with the earthquake.
Although there is no potential for a tsunami, Margiono still advises the public to pay attention to the condition of the post-earthquake building. "Check and make sure the residential building is earthquake-resistant enough or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations," said Margiono.
