The Minister Of Communication And Information Orders To Break The Internet Line To Cambodia-Philippines To Eradicate Online Gambling

JAKARTA - Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi asked all operators of Telecommunication Services for Internet Access Gate Service or Network Access Point (NAP) to cut off internet communication access allegedly used for online gambling.

Budi Arie, who is also the Daily Chair of the Online Gambling Eradication Prevention Task Force, asked NAP to cut off internet communication lines allegedly used for online gambling, especially from and to Cambodia and the Philippine Davao.

"All of our efforts are made to eradicate online gambling," said Budi Arie, Sunday, June 23, as reported by Antara.

The request was contained in a letter from the Minister of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia to the Operator of Telecommunication Services for Internet Access Gate Services (Network Access Point/NAP), with letter number B-1678/M.KOMINFO/PI.02.02/06/2024 dated June 21, 2024.

In the letter, Budi Arie requested that access termination be carried out within 3x24 hours from the time the letter was signed.

"Conducting the termination of internet communication lines allegedly used for online gambling, especially from and to Cambodia and the Philippine Davao within 3 x 24 hours (days of work) since this letter was signed," the letter reads.

The period of termination of access will be evaluated to be restored immediately if the situation is conducive. NAP was also asked to report the steps for termination and the results of its implementation for evaluation and follow-up.

The request refers to the provisions of Law (UU) Number 36 of 1999 concerning Telecommunications and the results of the online gambling eradication Task Force meeting chaired by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto on 19 June 2024.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics has intensively cut off access to sites containing online gambling content. From 17 July 2023 to 13 June 2024, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has blocked 2,945,150 online gambling content. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics has also submitted a request for the closure of 555 e-wallet accounts related to online gambling activities to Bank Indonesia as well as blocking 5,779 bank accounts related to online gambling to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) from 18 September 2023 to 28 May 2024. Since 17 July 2023 to 13 June 2024, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has handled 16,596 gambling page insertions on educational sites and 18,974 gambling page insertions on government websites.
