Sued By Class Action, Apple Accused Of Paying Female Workers With Low Salaries

JAKARTA Apple accepted a group lawsuit or class action on Thursday, June 13. The multinational tech company was sued on charges of paying female employees with a smaller salary. Reporting from Reuters, the lawsuit was filed by two women who have worked for more than ten years at Apple. They claim that more than 12,000 female workers in California are paid less than male workers despite the same workload. The two Apple workers also claim that the company provides lower pay to female workers in engineering, marketing, and AppleCare. These lower payments continue to be carried out systematically. They also explain in the lawsuit that the early salaries of female workers are made based on the expectations of workers' salaries. Most workers give larger numbers than previous companies so that inter-gender wage gaps continue to occur. Eve Cervantez as the plaintiff's attorney emphasizes that Apple's practice has made gaps towards gender. The lawyer said that, This is an unfavorable situation for female employees at Apple."

Meanwhile, Apple said in a statement that it is committed to inclusion and equality in payments. The company is even working with third parties to provide the right salary. "Since 2017, Apple has achieved and maintained gender wage equality and every year we partner with third-party experts independently to check the total compensation of each team member and make adjustments, if necessary, to ensure that we maintain salary equality," Apple said. Although the iPhone developers are trying to defend themselves, they will face a class action lawsuit at the San Francisco state court. If they lose in court, the company may have to pay compensation and unspecified penalties.
