Italian Regulators Fine Meta For Unfair Business Practices

JAKARTA - Italy's antitrust authority, AGCM, has fined Facebook and Instagram owner Meta for unfair business practices. This was announced by the supervisor on Wednesday, June 5.

AGCM says that Instagram users are not given adequate information about the use of their personal data for commercial purposes, as explained in regulatory statements.

They also said that Facebook and Instagram users were not given the right information about how they could object to account suspension.

Meta itself claims to have solved the problem.

"We disagree with the Italian competition authority's decision and are assessing our options," a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson added that since August 2023, Meta has implemented several changes for Italian users overcoming authority concerns, including increased transparency about how companies use data to display ads on Instagram.
