BPS Calls Chicken And Egg Meat A Contributor To Inflation March 2024

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded inflation in March 2024 of 0.52 percent on a monthly basis or month to month (mtm).

Meanwhile, on an annual basis or year on year (yoy) there was an inflation of 3.05 percent.

Acting (Plt) Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti conveyed that inflation in Ramadan was driven by all components, especially volatile price components.

"The March 2024 inflation certainly coincides with the moment of Ramadan and has increased inflation compared to February 2024," he said at a press conference, Monday, April 1, 2024.

Amalia said that when compared to Ramadan 2023, inflation in Ramadan this year is relatively higher at 0.52 percent, but when compared to inflation in Ramadan 2022, it is much higher than this year's Ramadan inflation.

Amalia explained that the volatile price component experienced inflation of 2.16 percent (mom) with the largest share of inflation, namely 0.36 percent and the main causes of this year's Ramadan inflation, was dominated by volatile food commodities.

Such as broiler eggs, broiler meat, rice, cayenne pepper and garlic, and shallots.

"Some of the commodities experiencing deflation in March 2024 are red chilies, tomatoes and air transportation rates," he explained.

According to Amalia, at the moment of Ramadan and Eid 2022 and 2023, the group that is usually the most dominant in contributing to inflation is the food and beverage group and transportation.

However, this year's inflation is different from this historical condition, in this year's Ramadan period, the expenditure group that contributed to inflation in addition to food and tobacco, the second largest was personal care and others with a 0.04 percent share of inflation.

"Meanwhile, transportation groups contributed lower inflation, which was 0.01 percent in March 2024. This was driven by air transportation rates which in the month of Ramadan this year turned out to have deflations of 0.97 percent," he said.

Amalia said that if detailed there were 20 provinces that experienced deflation of air transportation rates and 17 provinces experienced inflation of air transportation rates, while one other province was stable.
