Space, Twitter's Clubhouse-Like Service

JAKARTA - Twitter Spaces, Twitter's platform with a Clubhouse-like service, is now available on Android. Previously, this audio chat service could only be used via iOS.

Twitter introduced a limited version of the Clubhouse competitor in January. At that time, the service could only be accessed by iOS users.

In addition, users who have the right to open conversation rooms are still limited. Only a select few users.

According to the company, the restrictions fit with Spaces' goal of voting for minority groups. Especially women and members of marginalized groups. Two types of users get priority to open chat rooms.

As the service and users grew, Twitter finally launched the Android version of Space. Through their official account on the Twitter platform, @TwitterSpaces, the company said that this service can be used by Android phone users.

“Android users, our beta is growing! Starting today, you can join and chat in Space. Soon, you will be able to create your own conversation room. However, we are still working on a number of things”, wrote Spaces via their official Twitter account, Tuesday, March 2.

The announcement tweet did not state when Android users can open conversation rooms on Spaces. From the announcement, it seems that Android users can only talk and hear conversations that are taking place in one room. They cannot open their own conversation room yet.

According to the explanation of a Twitter spokesperson contacted via email by The Verge, both Android and iOS users will be able to hear or create their own conversation rooms. But, "soon".

Another Audio-Based Twitter Service

Over the last few months, Twitter has increased the number of audio-based services. Apart from launching the beta version of Spaces, the social media platform also launched an audio tweet feature for iOS in June last year.

Just like Spaces, this feature is limited to a few users. Through this feature, users can record and then send an audio message with a duration of 140 seconds.

In addition, Twitter also introduced an audio-based Direct Messages (DM) feature in India last month. This feature can be used by Android and iOS users.

Unfortunately, until now the company has not shown their desire to expand the coverage area of this feature. So, Twitter users in Indonesia, please be patient if they want to try these features.
