Microsoft Recruits DeepMind Co-Founder To Lead Company's Latest AI Division

JAKARTA - Tech giant Microsoft announced it had recruited Mustafa Suleyman and Karern Simonyan to form a new organization focused on artificial intelligence technology, Microsoft AI.

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella said that Mustafa would become EVP and CEO, Microsoft AI. Meanwhile, Karern will join this group as Chief Scientist.

In carrying out his duties, Mustafa will join the senior leadership team (SLT), and report his work directly to Nadella, while Karern will report to Mustafa.

"I have known Mustafa for several years and admire him very much as the founder of DeepMind and Inflexion, and as a visionary, product maker, and builder of a pioneering team pursuing a bold mission," Nadella said in his announcement.

Meanwhile, Karern, Nadella knows that she is one of the founders and Chief Scientist Inflection AI and also a well-known AI-thinking researcher and leader, who has led the development of several of the largest AI breakthroughs over the past decade including AlphaZero.

As part of this transition, Mikhail Parakhin and his entire team, including Copilot, Bing, and Edge, and Phasha Bilenko and the GenAI team will move to report to Mustafa.

Nadella said that currently her company and the world, only entering the second year of the transition of the AI platform, and Microsoft must ensure that they have the ability and capacity to innovate bravely.
