Strange Cloud Formation Over Florida Keys Revealed As An Ordinary Natural Phenomenon
JAKARTA - A peculiar cloud rare event northwest of Florida Keys has recently attracted the attention of many people, sparking speculation about possible unidentified or even UFO flying objects. However, through monitoring and research by the US Space Agency (NASA) as well as meteorological scientists, the mystery behind the phenomenon has been solved.
Arrested by NASA's Terra satellite at the end of January, a cloud formation called the "Cavum cloud" resembles the shape of a giant cult or UFO, inviting comparisons with science fiction film scenes. However, in reality, the origin of this phenomenon is airplanes.
The Cavum cloud, sometimes called "hole-punch clouds" or "fallstreak holes," is the result of an airplane traversing the clouds of ablus. Scientists have long been confused by this phenomenon, but research conducted in 2010 finally solved the puzzle.
Scientists found that the overflowing clouds at this intermediate altitude consisted of very pure water vapor which was still in a "supercooled" state, meaning it had not frozen into ice even though its temperature was very cold. As the plane crosses the cloud, its wing or propeller movement changes the pressure around the droplet, triggering a process called "adiabatic expansion."

This process causes the droplet of supercooled water to freeze spontaneously, forming crystalline ice heavy and falling from the cloud, leaving a distinctive "vacancy" in the cloud. Although sometimes these ice crystals fall downward, leaving a striking "hole-punch" effect, sometimes they do not reach the ground, producing so-called "virga" or traces of precipitation evaporated before reaching the surface.
Although initially seen as a mysterious phenomenon, scientific explanations of the Cavum cloud have provided a clearer insight into the natural process that is taking place. Nonetheless, the beauty and uniqueness of this cloud formation remains an amazing thing to see.
Thus, what was originally thought of as a possible " alien invasion" turned out to be the result of complex interactions between airplanes and unique atmospheric conditions. This discovery shows how important scientific research is in explaining natural phenomena that seem strange or unusual.
