PM Shtayyeh Mundur, Amerika Serikat: Langkah Baik Otoritas Palestina Untuk Mereformasi Dan Merevitalisasi Dirinya

JAKARTA - The United States welcomes the decision of Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh and his government on Monday, assessing it as part of reform amid uncertainty over the future of governance in the post-war Gaza Strip.

"In the end, the leadership of the Palestinian Authority is a question that Palestinians themselves must decide," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.

"But we welcome the steps taken by the Palestinian Authority to reform and revitalize themselves," he said.

Miller called the move a positive and important step towards achieving the reunification of Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

The resignation was announced at a time of increasing pressure by Uncle Sam's country on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to overhaul the Palestinian Authority, which would allow them to take a bigger role in governing postwar Gaza.

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh announced his resignation, saying it had been submitted to President Mahmoud Abbas.

"I submit the government's resignation to the President," Shtayyeh said, adding it happened after "development related to aggression against the Gaza Strip as well as escalation in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Shtayyeh said he resigned to allow the formation of widespread consensus among Palestinians about political arrangements after Israel's war against Hamas.

Citing CNN, Shtayyeh in a post on Facebook said the resignation plan had been submitted to President Abbas last Tuesday and was submitted in writing yesterday.

International efforts are intensifying to stop fighting in Gaza and start building a political structure to rule the region after the war.

It is known that the militant group Hamas toppled the Palestinian Authority in Gaza in 2007 and ruled the region since then.
