Former Italian National Team Captain Offered To Train South Korea

JAKARTA - Former captain of the Italian national team, Fabio Cannavaro, received an offer to handle South Korea replacing the sacked Jurgen Klinsmann.

The South Korean national team did not continue to cooperate with Klinsmann following the failure in the 2023 Asian Cup.

Klinsmann is targeted to bring Song Heung-min and colleagues to win in the most grand football tournament in Asia.

However, the former German national team coach failed. South Korea only reached the semifinals before being defeated by the Jordan 0-2 surprise team.

Klinsmann's performance also received criticism from the South Korean football public. In fact, he is considered no better than a local coach.

Despite denying pressure from fans, the South Korean football federation (KFA) then dismissed Klinsmann.

In fact, he is projected to bring South Korea to the 2026 World Cup Qualification.

After firing the former German and Inter Milan striker, South Korea offered the position to Cannavaro who is currently unemployed.

The former centre-back of Parma, Inter, and Juventus is still unemployed after the last time they handled Benevento, who was competing in Serie B.

After 17 matches without picking up any results, Cannavaro then resigned in February 2023.

Cannavaro is indeed a success as a player. He brought Italy to win the 2006 World Cup. The defender, who started his career at Napoli and played for Real Madrid, won various trophies with the club.

However, when turning to coach, Cannavaro was even less successful. He also coached more outside Italy, such as China by dealing with the Guangzhou Evergrande club and then the Chinese national team.

The 50-year-old coach also had an accuracy with the Saudi Arabian team, namely Al Ahly and Al Nassr.

Although the curriculum vitae was not good, it did not dampen KFA's move to recruit him. Cannavaro also likely accepted the offer.

He was given a two-week opportunity by South Korea to consider it before refusing or accepting it.
