Google Wants IMessage To Be Categoryd As A Core Service In Europe

JAKARTA Now European Regulators have the Digital Market Law (DMA) to regulate several large services. Currently, they are investigating iMessage services.

The results of this investigation will determine whether iMessage is included in any of Europe's internal services. If proven so, iMessage must comply with the interoperability rules regulated within DMA.

Google and several local operators such as Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom also sent letters to regulators. The letter states that iMessage should be considered a core service in Europe such as WhatsApp and Messenger Meta.

When the European Commission categorizes iMessage as one of the core services, Apple must enrich messaging applications on their devices. The reason is, iMessage makes it difficult for users to reach other users until they finally depend on SMS.

"It is very important that businesses can reach all of their customers by utilizing modern communication services with enriched messaging features," reads one of the letters quoted by VOI from 9to5google.

Unlike the owner, Apple argues that iMessage cannot be considered a core service because the number of users is still below the DMA threshold, which is 45 million monthly active users.

However, European regulators will continue to investigate the current condition of iMessage before placing its position. Reportedly, regulators will conduct an investigation until February next year.
