US And Russian Companies Eyeing Nuclear Projects, Check Potential Locations For Building Nuclear Power Plants In Indonesia
YOGYAKARTA – Two foreign companies, namely ThorCon Power Indonesia and NuScale, are said to have shown interest in building a Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) in Indonesia. Check out potential locations for building nuclear power plants in Indonesia.
Previously, the Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi revealed that foreign companies were interested in building nuclear power plants in Indonesia. These foreign companies come from the United States (US) and Russia.
Yudo said, apart from PT ThorCon Power Indonesia, another company interested in building a nuclear power plant in Indonesia is NuScale.
"As far as we know, apart from ThorCon, NuScale has signed with Indonesia Power, a study collaboration with NuScale in the United States," said Yudo at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources building, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, October 24 2023.
So, where are the potential locations for building nuclear power plants in Indonesia? Check out the complete information below.
Potential Locations for Building Nuclear Power Plants in Indonesia
Long before the Director General of EBTKE at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi, revealed that a number of foreign companies were interested in building nuclear power plants in Indonesia, the National Energy Council (DEN) had already conducted a study of potential locations for building nuclear power plants.
This study was then used as input for the academic draft draft Government Regulation (RPP) on National Energy Policy (KEN).
It is hoped that the study carried out by DEN will be an input for the Draft Presidential Regulation (Perpres) concerning the Acceleration of Infrastructure Development for Providing Nuclear Energy-Based Electric Power.
Nuclear Technology Developer, Main Expert at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Suparman, said that there are 28 potential areas that could be used as locations for nuclear power plant construction.
Suparman said that the largest potential area is in West Kalimantan. The location selection took into account a number of criteria, such as peak ground acceleration of less than 0.6 gal, free from volcanic hazards, and 5 km away from active faults or faults.
"The first nuclear power plant is proposed to be built in Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan with small modular reactor technology," said Suparman, quoted from the official website of the National Energy Council, Wednesday, October 25 2023.
"In the future, large nuclear power plants and micro reactors can be built in stages as a substitute for biodiesel for remote areas," continued Suparman.
Responding to Suparman's proposal, expert from PT Indonesia Power Sugeng Triyono recommended that the first nuclear power plant be established on Semesak Island, Bengkayang Regency. Sugeng considers social, security and geological aspects.
DEN member Agus Puji Prasetyono hopes that nuclear power plants can be included in the electricity generation mix in the KEN reform draft.
