Twitter Will Have Encrypted DM, Competing with WhatsApp and Signal

JAKARTA - It seems that DMs or Twitter Direct Messages will get end-to-end encryption. The popular social network is currently being modified after Elon Musk's recent takeover.

The security feature was first spotted by analyst Jane Manchun Wong who accurately predicted the Twitter features before their official announcement indicated the same.

“Twitter is bringing back end-to-end encrypted DM Seeing signs the feature is in the works on Twitter for Android,” Wong tweeted on his Twitter account, @wongmjane.

As soon as Wong's tweet was published, Musk replied to the tweet with a wink emoji, strongly hinting that the feature was actually being developed by Twitter.

If the feature officially rolls out, end-to-end encrypted Twitter DMs will place the platform at the level of applications like Signal and WhatsApp.

This feature serves to ensure conversations between users can only be seen by those who send messages and not third parties who supervise.

Encryption in Twitter DMs will also allow the microblogging network to double as a secure instant messaging solution.

Cited from Macrumor, Thursday, November 17, Twitter started working on encryption for Twitter DMs in 2018 dubbed the secret conversation project, but the feature never materialized.

Musk previously promoted Signal via his Twitter page when WhatsApp was updating its controversial privacy policy earlier last year, wanting to make secure communications a priority for the service.

Even so, it remains to be seen whether Twitter will also take on more communication-oriented features like the popular messaging app in the future or just be a regular messaging service on social media.
