Qatar 2022 World Cup Players Can Share Their Performance Thanks to FIFA Player App
JAKARTA – As the 2022 World Cup in Qatar kicks off on November 20, fans will be inundated with statistics and match highlights on social media, live from the players. FIFA hopes it includes data and content from the newly published player app.
FIFA said on Friday, 23 September that all players in these finals will be able to track their performance data on a tailor-made app developed by the governing body that will allow footballers from 32 teams to access analysis and information.
This app has been created following feedback from players, via the FIFPRO player association, and the data will be synced with videos of their actions allowing quick assessment of key moments.
While the data and metrics are widely available to players with top clubs and national teams, employing a team of analysts, the app ensures that teams with less resources are also able to have access.
The app will use input from FIFA performance analysts, tracking data and physical performance metrics such as distance traveled, sprints and heat waves of their position.
Players will also be provided with photos from the match which they can share on social media along with their stats and data.
"This player-centric development is based on direct feedback from players and is another great example of how FIFA is making the best use of technology to improve the football experience for key actors on the pitch," said Johannes Holzmueller, FIFA Director of Football Technology & Innovation. , as quoted by Reuters.
Simon Colosimo, Deputy Secretary General of FIFPRO, said players had asked for better access to their performance data.
"The FIFA Players App is a positive outcome that will enable personal data rights and provide new resources for players at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar," he said.
FIFA has developed the FIFA Player App (FIFA Player App), based on input from professional players, in collaboration with FIFPRO, the global representative of professional football. The FIFA Player app will be used for the first time at the World Cup in Qatar.
Surveys and interviews conducted show that players are very interested in their performance data and want to have easy access to this information. This FIFA Players App will give every player the opportunity to access their individual player performance data immediately after each match.

The data collected includes the following:
Improved football data metrics – calculated from enhanced event data, drawn by FIFA's highly trained team of football performance analysts, combined with tracking data. Examples include whether a player makes an offer or a move to receive, whether their distribution action crosses the opponent's line, and the pressure they exert on an opponent who has possession of the ball. All metrics are based on the definition of FIFA Football Language.
Physical performance metrics – collected via a highly accurate in-stadium tracking system consisting of multiple cameras located around the pitch for maximum player coverage. Metrics include distance covered at various speed thresholds, number of stunts over 25km/h, and maximum speed, all displayed on a position heat map.
Enhanced football intelligence metrics – created by the FIFA Football Performance Analytics & Insights team through the development of a suite of live-operating algorithms and models to integrate event data and tracking. New metrics provide an innovative and exciting way to analyze play, including game phase, line-breaking events, receiving locations, and pressure applied to players in possession.
