JAKARTA - The United States will experience serious global consequences, such as a worsening of the security situation in Asia, following the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
This was said by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council and former president Dmitry Medvedev to Sputnik News.
"This may have been what America wanted, fueling regional tensions, but in vain. After all, they would have far more serious consequences on a global scale. Security in Asia would deteriorate dramatically. Distrust would be enormous. Markets would continue to fall. Prices will continue to fall. gasoline and groceries will go up," Medvedev said, as quoted on August 5.
He also expressed skepticism about statements from the White House, which claimed President Joe Biden's administration disapproved of Pelosi's trip, and warned her of possible risks. Medvedev noted it was just a staged play.
"Such visits are planned in advance. Scenarios are written for all participants. Roles in them are distributed, statements are carefully coordinated. There are no internal contradictions between the Biden Administration and Congress on this issue," the former president said.
Pelosi traveled to Taiwan on Tuesday as part of her Asia tour, despite numerous warnings from Beijing, saying such a move was a provocation that damaged US-China relations.
