China Responds To Nancy Pelosi's Visit With Military Exercises And Conventional Missile Tests, Indonesian Ministry Of Foreign Affairs: Indonesia Continues To Adhere To The One China Policy
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is concerned about the development of conditions in the Taiwan Strait, related to the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, asking rivalries not to become conflicts and sticking to the "One China" policy.
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrapped up her visit to Taiwan, amid strong criticism and criticism from China, by then addressing Parliament before meeting President Tsai Ing-wen and receiving the highest honor.
That left China with Beijing condemning the highest-level US visit to Taiwan in 25 years as a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, responding with a flurry of military exercises, summoning the US ambassador in Beijing, and announcing the suspension of some agricultural imports from Taiwan.
"Indonesia is very concerned about the increasingly sharp rivalry between the big powers. If not managed properly, this rivalry can create the potential for open conflict and disrupt existing stability and peace, including in the Taiwan Strait", said the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Teuku Faizasyah in a written statement, Wednesday, August 3.
Faizasyah further said that Indonesia encourages all parties to take concrete steps to reduce tensions that could worsen the situation.
He added that the world needs the wisdom and responsibility of world leaders so that peace and stability can be maintained.
"Indonesia continues to adhere to the 'One China Policy' policy", he said.
Pelosi is currently on an Asia tour that includes an announced visit to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. His visit to Taiwan was unannounced but widely anticipated, citing Reuters.
China's Foreign Ministry said it had lodged a strong protest with the United States, saying Pelosi's visit severely damaged peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, "had a severe impact on the political foundation of China-US relations, and seriously violated China's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Meanwhile, Chinese warplanes buzzed over the line dividing the Taiwan Strait before his arrival. China's military has been on high alert and will launch a "targeted military operation" in response to Pelosi's visit, the defense ministry said.
Not only that, China's military announced joint air and sea drills near Taiwan from Tuesday evening and tested conventional missile launches in the sea east of Taiwan, with China's state news agency Xinhua describing live-fire drills and other drills around Taiwan from Thursday to Sunday.
