Amid Delayed Acquisition By Microsoft, Blizzard Intends To Acquire Proletariat Studios In Boston

JAKARTA - Blizzard Entertainment reportedly has plans to acquire studio Proletariat, the studio behind the development of the third-person shooter game, free-to-play, Spellbreak.

In a report from VentureBeat, the company intends to acquire Boston-based studio Proletariat to increase staff at the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft.

Later, after the agreement, the Proletariat team in Boston will become part of Blizzard. 100 people from the studio will start working on World of Warcraft, including the Dragonflight expansion.

As a result of this acquisition, Spellbreak will be disabled. “After more than four years of combining elemental magic and spells, we have made the decision to end development of Spellbreak. Servers will be closed in early 2023," the Proletariat wrote on its website.

Proletariat is a game studio founded in 2012, launching its first game titled World Zombination in 2015 for mobile.

The plan will be Blizzard's biggest acquisition in decades, given the company itself is in the midst of a pending acquisition by Microsoft, which is expected to be completed sometime next year.

"We put players at the forefront of everything we do, and we work hard to meet and exceed their expectations," Blizzard president Mike Ybarra said in a statement, citing The Verge.

Ybarra continued, an important part of keeping players on track is looking after their team and making sure they have the resources to produce an experience the community will love while giving their team space to explore more creative opportunities in their projects.

"The proletariat would be well suited to support Blizzard's mission of bringing high-quality content to our players more often," he continued.
