Netflix Launches Reality Competition "Squid Game: The Challenge" With Total Prize Of IDR 65.8 Billion

JAKARTA - Netflix Inc's most watched series are no longer just fictional television shows. This comes after the streaming service spawned its "biggest reality competition" called "Squid Game: The Challenge."

Unlike the series where the stakes are life or death, the worst luck in this 456-player competition will be for the $4.56 million prize pool, which Netflix claims is the largest total prize pool in reality TV history.

"Squid Game" became Netflix's most-watched series when it released in September 2021 as it tells the story of cash-strapped contestants who play childhood games for a chance to win some money that changes their lives.

Season one holds the record for being the most popular Netflix series of all time, with more than 1.65 billion hours watched in its first 28 days, the company said.

"This 10-episode reality competition will include games inspired by the original show, as well as new additions," Netflix said.

One of YouTube's top content creators in the US, MrBeast, is doing an unofficial iteration of this idea by recreating aspects of South Korean drama sets. He also hosts games featured in the show, such as "Red Light, Green Light."

The YouTuber also opted out of the kill aspect but installed a device on all 456 players that mimicked the shot of a bullet when a player was sidelined.

The Netflix reality show will be filmed in the UK and currently only features English speakers. This announcement comes just days after the script series was updated for a second season.
