DPR Supports Death Penalty For Herry Wirawan For Raping 13 Female Students: Reasonable Because It Causes Severe Trauma

JAKARTA - Commission III of the House of Representatives supports the demand for the death penalty against Herry Wirawan, accused of raping 13 female students in Bandung, West Java.

"I support (the demand for the death penalty, ed) for crimes of sexual violence involving multiple and repeated victims," ​​said Member of Commission III of the DPR RI PPP faction, Arsul Sani, Wednesday, January 12.

Arsul considered that the prosecutor's demands were appropriate to show that the legal consequences for perpetrators of sexual violence were serious.

"In the midst of rampant crimes of sexual violence against women and children, the prosecution's demands, in this case, send a message to the public that the legal consequences of committing a crime of sexual violence now are severe. Because the maximum criminal charges can be," he said.

"In fact, not only imprisonment but also castration," he continued.

The deputy chairman of the MPR admitted that the death demand always caused controversy. He also supports the perpetrators of sexual violence getting additional punishment, such as castration.

Moreover, said Arsul, the sexual crimes committed by Herry Wirawan could cause severe trauma to the victims.

"So, naturally the perpetrators get the maximum punishment," he said.

It is known that the defendant in the case of raping 13 female students in Bandung, Herry Wirawan, was sentenced to death by the public prosecutor. Herry was found guilty of committing such acts of obscenity against dozens of his students.

"In our demands, first we demand the defendant with the death penalty. As proof of our commitment to provide a deterrent effect on the perpetrators or on other parties who will commit (sexual) crimes," said Head of the West Java High Prosecutor's Office Asep N Mulyana after the trial at the District Court Class IA Bandung, Tuesday, January 11th.

Asep who became the public prosecutor also revealed that the second charge against the defendant was in the form of additional punishment in the form of chemical castration.

"Secondly, we also imposed or asked the judge to impose additional penalties in the form of identity announcements distributed through judges and additional penalties in the form of chemical castration," he said.

The third claim, Asep said, his party also asked the panel of judges to impose a sentence of Rp500 million and a subsidiary for one year in prison and oblige the defendant to pay restitution to the children of the victims, a total of Rp330 million.
