Badminton World Championship Final Results Recap 2021: Japan Overall Champion, Singapore Wins First Title

JAKARTA - The Badminton World Championship 2021 has ended after one week of being held in Huelva, Spain. In the final round which took place on Sunday, December 19, Japan closed the competition at the end of this year with the overall title.

On the other hand, this competition also recorded a new score for Singapore. For the first time, the representative from the Lion Country can win the title.

Japan's status as the overall champion was obtained thanks to the achievement of two gold, one silver and two bronze medals. The first gold for Japan was presented in the women's singles sector.

Their young badminton player, Akane Yamaguchi successfully beat back the badminton representative from Chinese Taipei, Tai Tzu Ying who is also the owner of world number one. Yamaguchi only needed to play two games over 39 minutes to win 21-14 and 21-11.

The second gold for Japan was presented in the men's doubles sector, represented by Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi. They won the title after defeating representatives of China, He Jiting/Tan Qiang with a score of 21-12 and 21-18 in a match that lasted 38 minutes.

After collecting two gold, Japan could have grabbed a third gold. But their representatives in the mixed doubles after Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino who are ranked number four in the world have to settle for silver.

Watanabe/Higashino fell to the Thai pair who is the world's number one mixed doubles pair, Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai. They were defeated in the opening match which lasted for 46 minutes with a score of 13-21 and 14-21.

Meanwhile, the women's doubles title went to representatives of China, Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan who have the title of world number three badminton player. They secured the title after defeating the representative of South Korea who is also the second seed, Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan in the final match.

In this final match, there was also a surprise made by the representative of Singapore, Loh Kean Yew. The men's singles badminton player unexpectedly stepped into the final and was able to give his country its first title at the world championship.

Loh Kean Yew brought home his inaugural 2021 World Championship gold medal after defeating Indian player Srikanth Kidambi in a two-game straight battle, 21-15 and 22-20 in the final.
