Discourse On The Zero Percent Presidential Threshold Discussed By Many, PPP: No Plan To Revise The Election Law Yet

JAKARTA - Secretary of the PPP faction of the DPR RI, Achmad Baidowi, emphasized that until now the DPR and the government have not planned to revise the Election Law.

This was said by Baidowi in response to the presidential Threshold (PT) proposal to apply zero percent to avoid corrupt practices due to high political costs.

"So far, there is no plan to revise the Election Law so that the provisions of Law 7/2017 remain valid as long as it concerns articles that have not been overturned by the Constitutional Court," Baidowi said in Jakarta, Wednesday, December 15.

Furthermore, Baidowi said that the presidential proposal for a zero percent threshold was legitimately submitted as part of freedom of expression. This includes the right to submit a judicial review to the Constitutional Court because that is also protected by law.

"However, lawsuits against the Election Law for zero percent PT have often been carried out and rejected by the Court. The Court gives power to the legislators, namely the DPR and the government to regulate the threshold provisions," explained Awiek, as he is known.

The chairman of the PPP DPP actually considers the existence of a presidential threshold as a form of incentive or appreciation for political parties that have fought in the election.

"Besides, don't let the president-elect later not get support in parliament so that it will hinder the policies he makes," said Awiek.
