Regarding The 2024 Election, Commission II Of The Indonesian House Of Representatives Asks Ministers To Execute President Jokowi's Instructions

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Luqman Hakim asked the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian and the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkoopolhukam) Mahfud MD to carry out President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) directives to immediately set a date for the 2024 election.

"Regarding the voting date for the 2024 General Election, President Joko Widodo, as conveyed by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD on September 23, 2021, requested that it be determined immediately without being affected by the issue of amendments to the 1945 Constitution, extension of office and so on," Luqman said in Jakarta, Tuesday.

According to him, the president also gave directions to the General Election Commission (KPU) so that the draft stages and schedule for the 2024 General Election which will be held in February 2024 are accompanied by an efficient financing plan.

He explained that the direction was given by President Jokowi when he received an audience of seven members and the Secretary-General of the KPU on November 11, 2021.

"From the two facts above, in my opinion, the position and attitude of the president is clear that elections must still be held in 2024 and therefore the president asks that the election date be set and announced to the public," he said as reported by Antara.

He hopes that no part of the power has a hidden agenda to systematically thwart the implementation of the 2024 Simultaneous General Election and Regional Head Elections (Pilkada).

According to Luqman, this is like political maneuvers by preventing the determination of the 2024 election date.

In addition, he considered that there was no relevance in linking the determination of the date of the 2024 General Election with the selection process for candidates for members of the KPU and Election Supervisory Council (Bawaslu RI) which is currently underway.

"If the determination of the election date is waiting for the inauguration of a new KPU member, namely the KPU for the 2022-2027 period, I am afraid that it will cause various difficulties for the preparation of the stages and schedule of the 2024 General Election," he said.

According to him, this is mainly related to the preparation of technical rules for the election and the allocation of the budget for the activities of the stages and schedule of the General Election from the state budget (APBN).

This is the request of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission II to the relevant ministers to comply with President Jokowi's directives regarding elections.
